Does that help getElementsByTagName("span") return a HTMLCollection. So if you want to use toUpperCase(), you need to loop through it and call innerText.
var x = document.getElementsByTagName("span");

function capital(a){
    return a[0].toUpperCase() + a.slice(1);

for(el of x) {
  el.innerText = capital(el.innerText);
<div id="test">
          <span>test</span> <span>test</span> <span>test</span>

This might help you The following is not "nice", and I'm sure somebody (mainly Dimitri) could come up with something far simpler (especially in XSLT 2.0)... but I've tested this and it works
<xsl:template name="CamelCase">
  <xsl:param name="text"/>
    <xsl:when test="contains($text,' ')">
      <xsl:call-template name="CamelCaseWord">
        <xsl:with-param name="text" select="substring-before($text,' ')"/>
      <xsl:text> </xsl:text>
      <xsl:call-template name="CamelCase">
        <xsl:with-param name="text" select="substring-after($text,' ')"/>
      <xsl:call-template name="CamelCaseWord">
        <xsl:with-param name="text" select="$text"/>

<xsl:template name="CamelCaseWord">
  <xsl:param name="text"/>
  <xsl:value-of select="translate(substring($text,1,1),'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz','ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ')" /><xsl:value-of select="translate(substring($text,2,string-length($text)-1),'ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ','abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz')" />
<xsl:call-template name="CamelCase">
   <xsl:with-param name="text">dInEsh sAchdeV kApil Muk</xsl:with-param>

How to convert every other character to upper case in a string

it fixes the issue If you want to get the uppercase of a char, you should use Character.toUpperCase(c), not String's toUpperCase.
So, I think you might be looking for something like this:
public static void main(String[] args) {
    String alphabet = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzåäö";

    StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder();
    for (int i = 0; i < alphabet.length(); i++) {
        char c = alphabet.charAt(i);
        sb.append(i % 2 == 0 ? Character.toUpperCase(c) : c);
    String result = sb.toString();
public static void main(String[] args) {
    String alphabet = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzåäö";

    char[] chars = alphabet.toCharArray();
    for (int i = 0; i < alphabet.length(); i+=2) {
        chars[i] = Character.toUpperCase(chars[i]);
    String result = new String(chars);

How to convert lower case character into upper case after each special character present in the String?

I hope this helps you . Try this. It will take your sample String split it on the separtar, go through and uppercase each word after the first the combined them back and return it.
public String cammelCase(String sampleString, String separator) {
  String[] split = sampleString.split(separator);

  if (split.length < 2) return sampleString;

  for (int i =  1; i < split.length; i++) {
   split[i] = split[i].substring(0,1).toUpperCase() + split[i].substring(1);

  String retStr = "";
  for (int i =0; i < split.length; i++) {
    resStr += split[i];
    if (i != split.length - 1) {
      retStr += separator;
 return retStr;
