To fix the issue you can do There is not such selector to do this but you can simulate the effect using a pseudo element:
table {
  overflow: hidden;
  position: relative;
  z-index: 0;
}

tr>td:empty {
  position: relative;
}

tr>td:empty::before {
  content: "";
  position: absolute;
  z-index: -1;
  top: 0;
  left: -50vw;
  right: -50vw;
  bottom: 0;
  background-color: #f3f3f3;
}
<table>
  <thead></thead>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <td>No</td>
      <td>empty</td>
      <td>cells</td>
      <td>here</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>Does</td>
      <td>have</td>
      <td>empty</td>
      <td>cell</td>
      <td></td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
  <tfoot></tfoot>
</table>
<table>
  <thead></thead>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <td></td>
      <td>empty</td>
      <td>cells</td>
      <td></td>
      <td>here</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>Does</td>
      <td>have</td>
      <td></td>
      <td>empty</td>
      <td>cell</td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
  <tfoot></tfoot>
</table>

Sass ampersand, select immmediate parent?

Tag : sass , By : lifchicker

Does that help As of this writing, there is no Sass selector for the direct parent instead of the root parent of an element. There is & which (as you know) selects the root parent. There are also % placeholder selectors which hides a rule until it's been extended.
Sass is open-sourced, so you could contribute a new "direct parent" selector.

SASS select class that was chained to parent

it should still fix some issue & is treated as parent selector reference in Sass, because of this your code doesn't work since it refers wrong selector.
Use of & directly will not help here, but your goal can be achieved by using mixins, for example:
@mixin child($class) {
  &.#{$class} {
    .child {
      @content;
    }
  }
}

.parent {
  @include child(green) {
    color: green;
  }
  @include child(blue) {
    color: blue;
  }
  @include child(text-align-right) {
    text-align: right;
  }
}

Select parent selector in SASS/SCSS

it should still fix some issue Either you write both the selectors with the full classname (without using &) or you could save a reference to the .message class and use it in the nested selector
.message {

  display: block;
  width: 300px;
  border-radius: 5px;
  border: 2px solid #000;
  padding: 10px;

  $this: &; /* reference to the .message class */

  &__title {
    font-size: 18px;
    line-height: 1;
    color: #000;
    margin-bottom: 10px;
  }

  &__content {
    font-size: 15px;
    color: #000;
  }

  &--success {
    border-color: #3f9442;

    /* use the reference stored */

    #{$this}__title {
      color: #3f9442;
    }

    #{$this}__content {
      color: #3f9442;
    }
  }
}
