wish help you to fix your issue This XPath expression returns NodeB if it exists (and has text content) and NodeA in the other case:
//my:NodeB[text()] | //my:NodeA[text() and not(//my:NodeB[text()])]
//my:NodeB[text()]/* | //my:NodeA[text() and not(//my:NodeB[text()])]/*

I think the issue was by ths following , Assume: , XPath 1.0 or 2.0
The standard idiom for that is:
//foo[contains(concat(' ', normalize-space(@bar), ' '), ' one ')]
//foo[tokenize(@bar,'\s+')='one']

XPath: Select parent node based on multiple child criteria

To fix this issue This is a complicated XPath problem I cannot figure out. , You can try this way (formatted for readability) :
//event
[
    participant/participant_name[contains(.,'Nationals')]
]
[
    event_datetimeGMT[contains(.,'2015-07-29')]
]
[
    league='MLB Baseball'
]
[
    period/period_description='Game'
]
./participant[visiting_home_draw='Home']/odds/moneyline
./period/total/total_points
./period/spread/spread_home
