it helps some times Actually you return Enum.
What you want to return is the Enum value of the passed enum as argument.
private <E extends Enum<?>> E getFirstFromEnum(Class<E> enumClass) {
  return enumClass.getEnumConstants()[0];

How to avoid type casting while passing generic Collection to legacy method?

Tag : java , By : jazzyfox

around this issue The problem is with the compatibility between the Set (from the map) and Set (the someLegacyMethod parameter).
T extends Number may be replaced at Runtime with Integer, Long, Double, etc. and then the map.keySet() will return a Set, Set, Set respectively.
public <T extends Number> void someMethod() {
    Map<T, String> map = new HashMap<>();
    Set<Number> set = new HashSet<Number>(map.keySet());

how to avoid casting when implementing generic interface

Hope this helps You have to change your class to implement Graph instead of just Graph.
public class AdjacencyList <K extends Comparable<K>, V>  implements Graph<K, V>
public void addVertex(K key, V value) {
    // TODO Auto-generated method stub

Is there any way with which I can avoid type casting while calling method with generic parameter?

To fix the issue you can do , You can make things a bit cleaner:
public class genericTest {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        genericTest genericTest = new genericTest();
        genericTest.setValue(new BigDecimal("10".toString()));
        genericTest.setValue(new Date(0));

    public <T> void setValue(T element) {
        if (element instanceof Date) {
            check((Date) element);

        if (element instanceof BigDecimal) {
            check((BigDecimal) element);

    public void check(Date localDate) {
        System.out.println("This is Date metho, Caller has casted T to Date " + localDate);

    public void check(BigDecimal localBigDecimal) {
        System.out.println("This is BigDecimal method, Caller has casted T to BigDecimal: " + localBigDecimal);
public <T> void setValue(T element) {

How to infer the generic type to avoid unchecked casting

Need explanation : Generic friendliness to avoid casting, this is not anymore needed in Java 8

help you fix your problem The problem is that your getDataFromEndpoint(...) method is generic in its return type and its T type argument is inferred solely from the return type of the method argument passed in by providing
<T> T Mockito.any(Class<T> type)
serviceUtil.<Data> getDataFromEndpoint(...)
