seems to work fine Making a pattern for a delimiter in your case is not practical, because it requires odd-even counting outside your pattern - something Java regex has hard time doing.
Your string is a perfect example: a single space is a separator when it is preceded by an even number of doublequotes; otherwise, it is part of a quoted value.
List<String> chunks = new ArrayList<>();
Matcher m = Pattern.compile("(([^\\s,]+)((\\s*)=(\\s*)\"([^\"]+)\"))")
     .matcher("shape=\"box\", fontsize = \"130\"fontstyle= \" ITALIC \" fillcolor=\"red\";");
while (m.find()) {

I hope this helps you . You need to use a negative lookbehind assertion.

Regex negation for a word is not working (Java 7)

it helps some times The problem is that you match multiple lines. And by default, the dot in Java's regular expressions does not match line terminators.
Therefore, you need to specify Pattern.DOTALL when you compile your regular expression.

like below fixes the issue Regexes match left to right, and lookaheads are no exception. Your expression will match three letters that are not followed by and (which is impossible because of the \b, by the way).
Move the lookahead before the \w to make it work:

Hope this helps Suppose I have the following two strings and want to use grep to see which match: , You need to use a PCRE pattern to filter the character vector:
x <- c("business_metric_one","business_metric_one_dk","business_metric_one_none","business_metric_two","business_metric_two_dk","business_metric_two_none")
grep("metric(?!.*_(?:dk|none))", x, value=TRUE, perl=TRUE)
## => [1] "business_metric_one" "business_metric_two"
