I hope this helps . Don't do this. instead use mayas internal mechanism, optionVar, for this.
But if you must do this then know that when you do:
import savedSettings

I'm trying to delete menuItems from an optionMenu with a seperate button, in maya python

With these it helps I'm writing this code to import textures. I pull them into a drop down menu and I'm trying to make another button that will give me the ability to remove the menuItems from that optionmenu. The clearList function at the bottom is the part that I'm having a lot of trouble with. That function probably doesn't make any sense right now because I have no idea how I'm going to accomplish this. Here's my code: , To delete the menu items, you have to call deleteUI on the items:
def clearList(self, *args):
    menuItems = cmds.optionMenu('optionMenu', q=True, itemListLong=True) # itemListLong returns the children
    if menuItems:

is it possible to have an optionmenu inside another optionmenu in tkinter python

Any of those help An optionmenu is literally just a menubutton and a menu, with a little bit of syntactic sugar.
Here's a simple example showing how you can have submenus on something that looks just like an optionmenu:
import tkinter as tk

root = tk.Tk()
var = tk.StringVar(value="one")
menubutton = tk.Menubutton(root, textvariable=var, indicatoron=True,
                           borderwidth=1, relief="raised", width=20)
main_menu = tk.Menu(menubutton, tearoff=False)

for item in (("Numbers", "one", "two", "three"),
             ("Colors", "red", "green", "blue")
    menu = tk.Menu(main_menu, tearoff=False)
    main_menu.add_cascade(label=item[0], menu=menu)
    for value in item[1:]:
        menu.add_radiobutton(value=value, label=value, variable=var)

menubutton.pack(side="top", padx=20, pady=20)

How do I add new options, and then read the new selected option in a python tkinter optionMenu?

I hope this helps . With the code I currently have, when the program starts, I can select from 3 options, and have that option printed to the console. I can also have text entered into the text entry, be added to the optionMenu list by pressing the button. , You have to add option_Left_Function as third argument
command=tkinter._setit(option_Left_StringVar, choice, option_Left_Function)
def add_To_List():
    entry = entry_Right.get()
    if entry not in category_list:

        menu_left = option_Left["menu"]
                  command=tkinter._setit(option_Left_StringVar, entry, option_Left_Function))

Maya Python: Change selected menuItem in an optionMenu

Hope this helps I've worte you a full working example with some good practise, your answer are the four last lines :)
    from functools import partial

    # Something to parse ui element, it is important to make difference between ui query and functions
    def optionMenuParser_string(opM_name, func, *args):
        # *args (or could be **kwargs) is here to pass maybe more arguments to a function
        string = cmds.optionMenu(opM_name, q=True, v=True) # you could even parse some flag or anything
        if args and len(args) > 1:
            # args len must be superior to 1 because maya always input True argument
            func(string, *args)

    # A function doing something with the string
    def printNewMenuItem( item ):
        print item

    window = cmds.window()
    # change command='' is a placeholder to input back the option menu name
    mygroup = cmds.optionMenu( label='Colors', changeCommand='' )
    # partial is used to put arguments in a function trhought the ui
    cmds.optionMenu(mygroup, e=1, changeCommand= partial(optionMenuParser_string, mygroup, printNewMenuItem) )
    cmds.menuItem( p=mygroup, label='Yellow' )
    cmds.menuItem( p=mygroup, label='Purple' )
    cmds.menuItem( p=mygroup, label='Orange' )
    cmds.showWindow( window )

    cmds.optionMenu(mygroup, q=True, v=True) # to get the name of the current value
    cmds.optionMenu(mygroup, q=True, sl=True) # to get the current index
    cmds.optionMenu(mygroup, e=True, sl = 3 )# to change the current value
    cmds.optionMenu(mygroup, e=True, v = 'Purple' )# to change the current value
