Is a server an infinite loop running as a background process?

Hope this helps That's more or less what server software generally does.
Usually it gets more complicated because the infinite loop "only" accepts the connection and each connection can often handle multiple "commands" (or whatever they are called in the used protocol), but the basic idea is roughly this.

hope this fix your issue I was trying out the commands as the video of Season1 Episode8 Processes and Jobs progressed. I have a bash terminal running on Ubuntu 16.04. , Try:
bash <<< 'while true; do echo ping; sleep 1; done'
[1]+ Stopped bash <<< 'while true; do echo ping; sleep 1; done'
(while true; do echo ping; sleep 1; done)
[1]+ Stopped ( while true; do
    echo ping; sleep 1;
done )
