will be helpful for those in need I've been trying to understand the following code that uses Depth-First-Search (DFS) to print out all unique combinations of length k comprising of numbers [1..n] , So your question concerns these two alternatives:
// works
res.add(new ArrayList<Integer>(item));

// won't work, results in empty lists
res.add(item);
for (int i = start; i <= n; i++) {
    item.add(i);
    dfs(n, k, i + 1, item, res);
    item.remove(item.size() - 1);
}

Java generics - ArrayList initialization

To fix the issue you can do You can't assign a List to a reference of type List because List allows types of numbers other than Integer. If you were allowed to do that, the following would be allowed:
List<Number> numbers = new ArrayList<Number>();
numbers.add(1.1); // add a double
List<Integer> ints = numbers;
Integer fail = ints.get(0); // ClassCastException!

How do I implement lazy initialization for a member arraylist variable in Java?

help you fix your problem I have a class with as private List children; which is currently initialized in the constructor but this is not always needed and I want to initialize it only when some other function need it. , To spell it out, this is one way of accomplishing it:
public class Whatever
{
    private List<String> children;

    public List<String> getChildren
    {
        if ( children == null ) { children = new ArrayList<String>(); }
        return children;
    }
    ...
}

Object arraylist initialization in Java

will be helpful for those in need When you pass the size (x) to the constructor of an ArrayList you DON'T initialize it with x new elements, you initialize it with exactly 0 elements. The capacity is x. The inner implementation of ArrayList is a regular array which will start with size x. When the array is filled, the array list initializes a new array of size 2x and copies the array of size x to it. This is a costly step. By declaring the size, you can spare this step if you know exactly how many elements will be in the ArrayList.

java best practice initialization arraylist map definition

hope this fix your issue Your question does not hold enough information to make the final verdict.
If your overall program is such that you have countless list and map variables, but each specific run only uses a few of them, then there is a case for lazy initialization. This is exceedingly rare in practice, however.

may help you . I was trying to initialize an ArrayList in a constructor, and I have something like this: , Here's the source from ArrayList:
The constructor:
public ArrayList(int initialCapacity)
{
     super();

     if (initialCapacity < 0)
          throw new IllegalArgumentException("Illegal Capacity: "+ initialCapacity);
     this.elementData = new Object[initialCapacity];
}
public void add(int index, E element) {
     rangeCheckForAdd(index);
     ensureCapacity(size+1);  // Increments modCount!!
     System.arraycopy(elementData, index, elementData, index + 1, size - index);
     elementData[index] = element;
     size++;
 }
 private void rangeCheckForAdd(int index) {
     if (index > size || index < 0)
         throw new IndexOutOfBoundsException(outOfBoundsMsg(index));
 }
