it fixes the issue So as usual, I finally get it working immediately after asking SO for help... I found that adding the line a.href = "#"; before the addEventListener call fixed it.

Attempting to use addEventListener with closures - similar code works on HTML file without addEventListener

This might help you
It should be noted when I put the same exact code from the HTML file into the .js file, I get this warning in the console: "TypeError: document.getElementById(...) is null"

Addeventlistener in for loop works, but debugger throws me an uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'addEventListener

it should still fix some issue The error is thrown during your last iteration. If products.length is 8 (for example), the valid indexes are 0 to 7. Your code also uses 8 as an index. You must exclude the last one. Just update your for to iterate to i//Get all elements with the class 'order' and attach eventlisteners var products=document.getElementsByClassName('order'); for (i=0; i<products.length; i++){ if (products) { products[i].addEventListener('keyup', delegate(), false); products[i].addEventListener('click', delegate(), false); }; } function delegate(){ return function(){ ch(); } }

addEventListener not working in Javascript but jQuery Click is working

will be helpful for those in need I am using modular pattern of javascript and trying to do things in Javascript way rather than Jquery , Take a look at this simple code example:
function describeTheParameter(p) {
    console.log("describeTheParameter invoked. p is of type " + typeof(p));
}

function stringFunction() {
    return "Hello World!";
}

describeTheParameter(stringFunction());
describeTheParameter(stringFunction);
imageElement.addEventListener('click',myapp.module2.addBackgroundImage(imageElement),false);
function addImage(imageElement) {
      return function() {
          myapp.module2.addBackgroundImage(imageElement);
      }
}

for(var i = 0;i < _config.backgroundImages.length; i++){
    var imageElement = _config.backgroundImages[i];
    imageElement.addEventListener('click', addImage(imageElement), false);
}
function imageClickHandler() {
    var imageElement = this;
    myapp.module2.addBackgroundImage(imageElement);
}

for(var i = 0;i < _config.backgroundImages.length; i++){
   var imageElement = _config.backgroundImages[i];
   imageElement.addEventListener('click', imageClickHandler, false);
}

JavaScript with addEventListener('keyup',)) not working on Web but working on jsfiddle, please assist

should help you out If I understand your question properly, your function is fine except for the moment when you enter a number with first number 3.
You can just change maxlength and it works fine. I added this line
inputControl.setAttribute("maxlength", "15");
var ccNumInputElement = $("#ccNumInputField")[0];
var ccNumHiddenFieldID = "creditCardForm.creditCard.cardNumber";
var ccNumHiddemElement = document.getElementById(ccNumHiddenFieldID) == null ? "" : document.getElementById(ccNumHiddenFieldID);
var ccardnumber = "";
var ccardnumberArray = ["", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", "", ""];
var ccardnumberLength = 0;

$(ccNumInputElement).on(addEventListener('keyup', processCCNum));

function processCCNum() {
  var inputControl = ccNumInputElement;
  var outputControl = ccNumHiddemElement;
  var ccardnumberMasked = "";

  ccardnumberLength = ccNumInputElement.value.length;

  var ccardnmmberLast = ccardnumberLength == 0 ? "" : inputControl.value
    .substring(ccardnumberLength - 1);

  var ccardnmmberFirst = ccardnumberLength == 0 ? "" : outputControl.value
    .substring(0, 1);

  if (ccardnumberLength == 0) {
    ccardnumberMasked = "";
    for (i = 0; i < 16; i++)
      ccardnumberArray[i] = "";
  }

  if (ccardnumberLength != 0) {
    if (ccardnmmberFirst == "3") {
      if (ccardnumberLength <= 11) {
        ccardnumberMasked = "***********".substring(0,
          ccardnumberLength);
        ccardnumberArray[ccardnumberLength - 1] = ccardnmmberLast;
      } else {
        ccardnumberMasked = "***********" +
          inputControl.value.substring(11);
        ccardnumberArray[ccardnumberLength - 1] = ccardnmmberLast;
      }

    } else {

      if (ccardnumberLength <= 12) {
        ccardnumberMasked = "************".substring(0,
          ccardnumberLength);
        ccardnumberArray[ccardnumberLength - 1] = ccardnmmberLast;
      } else {
        ccardnumberMasked = "************" +
          inputControl.value.substring(12);
        ccardnumberArray[ccardnumberLength - 1] = ccardnmmberLast;
      }
    }
    ccardnumber = "";
    if (ccardnmmberFirst == "3") {
      inputControl.setAttribute("maxlength", "15");
      for (i = 0; i < 15; i++) {
        ccardnumber = ccardnumber + ccardnumberArray[i];
      }
    } else {
      inputControl.setAttribute("maxlength", "16");
      for (i = 0; i < 16; i++) {
        ccardnumber = ccardnumber + ccardnumberArray[i];
      }
    }
    inputControl.value = ccardnumberMasked;

    outputControl.value = ccardnumber;
  }
}
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.3.1/jquery.min.js"></script>
<input type="text" id="ccNumInputField" size="51" class="billinginfo" maxlength="16" placeholder="XXXXXXXXXXXX1234" />
<input type="hidden" name="creditCardForm.creditCard.cardNumber" id="creditCardForm.creditCard.cardNumber" />

.ondragstart not equivalent to .addEventListener("dragstart"
