should help you out In PHP, you don't have the concept of the code-behind that you have in ASP.Net. PHP uses server tags on the HTML page itself. Also PHP does not have server controls like ASP.Net, just use the HTML controls.
Like in ASP.Net, you don't need Ajax or jQuery to implement the login page you're talking about. You did not put too much code, but here is a quick translation of your code to PHP:
    <div id="form-container>
    <form id="form1" action="">
        <span id="usernameLabel">Username:</span>
        <input type="text" id="username" />
        <span id="passwordLabel">Password:</span>
        <input type="text" id="password" />
    if($_POST["username"]) != null && $_POST["username"]) != ""){
        //do something
    else if($_POST["password"]) != null && $_POST["password"]) != ""){
        //do something
        // attempt login

This might help you ProfK,
You are looking at results produced by a preprocessed template. If you choose a regular "Text Template" in the new project item dialog of Visual Studio, you will see the complete transformation results.

having trouble understanding classie.js API

help you fix your problem Newer browsers support a .classList property on DOM element nodes. It's an array of class names. Older browsers just support the .className property, which is a single string containing space-separated class names.
If the if statement in the code you posted sees that the document node has a .classList property, it knows that it's running on a newer browser. If not, then it creates alternative versions of some class management utilities.

Trouble understanding Moq

this one helps. For a general background on mocking, this answer does a pretty good job explaining it and why you might want to use it in your unit tests.
Specifically, Moq is a library that allows you to easily creates mock object and control their behavior. It's easiest to describe with examples, so let's look at your first code sample:
public interface IFoo {
   public bool DoSomething(string);
   public bool TryParse(string, out string));

/* 1 */ var mock = new Mock<IFoo>();
/* 2 */ mock.Setup(foo => foo.DoSomething("ping")).Returns(true);
public class TestObject
    public string TestMethod(IFoo foo)
        if (foo.DoSomething("ping"))
            return "ping";
        else if (foo.DoSomething("pong"))
            return "pong";
        return "blah";
public class MockFoo : IFoo
    string trueValue;

    public MockFoo(string trueValue)
        this.trueValue = trueValue;

    public bool DoSomething(string value)
        return value == trueValue;
mock.Setup(foo => foo.DoSomething("ping")).Returns(true);
mock.Setup(foo => foo.DoSomething("pong")).Returns(true);
mock.Setup(foo => foo.DoSomething(It.IsAny<string>())).Returns(false);

Having trouble understanding currying

like below fixes the issue
Note: the char as type parameter, is not a Character. Since it starts with a lowercase, it is a type parameter. The type of x is thus x :: b as well.
f :: a -> a -> a -> a
f :: a -> (a -> (a -> a))
f :: a -> (a -> (a -> a))
x :: b
f :: a -> (a -> (a -> a))
y :: b -> b
f y :: a -> (a -> a)
f y :: (b -> b) -> ((b -> b) -> (b -> b))
f y :: (b -> b) -> (b -> b) -> b -> b
f :: a -> (a -> (a -> a))
z :: b -> (b -> b)
f z :: a -> (a -> a)
f z :: (b -> (b -> b)) -> ((b -> (b -> b)) -> (b -> (b -> b)))
f z :: (b -> b -> b) -> (b -> b -> b) -> b -> b -> b
