With these it helps Using an svg image with only a left and top border may be what you are looking for? Check the snippet, or this jsfiddle (the fiddle contains button to scale up/down the grid):
  background: url('http://testbed.nicon.nl/img/_FBs3b.svg') repeat;
  background-size: 20px 20px;

susy grid background display

I think the issue was by ths following , I was able to solve this issue by rearranging the import statements. toolkit and bourbon must create some conflict or overwrite something that makes the susy grid show. To get the grid to show I changed the order of the imports to:
@import "compass/reset";
@import "toolkit";
@import "susy";
@import "bourbon";

How to animate opacity of image for a background of a grid but NOT the controls in the grid?

it fixes the issue Just detach that parent-child relationship which is pretty simple since you already have it embedded in a Grid;
    <Window x:Class="george.MainWindow"
        Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525" >
            <RowDefinition />
            <RowDefinition />
                <Style TargetType="Border">
                    <Setter Property="Background">
                            <ImageBrush ImageSource="/George_mcfly.jpg" />
                    <Setter Property="Opacity" Value="0.4" />
                        <EventTrigger RoutedEvent="Border.MouseEnter">
                                    <DoubleAnimation To="0.8" AutoReverse="True" RepeatBehavior="Forever" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Opacity"></DoubleAnimation>
                        <EventTrigger RoutedEvent="Border.MouseLeave">
                                    <DoubleAnimation To="0.3"  AutoReverse="True" RepeatBehavior="Forever" Storyboard.TargetProperty="Opacity"></DoubleAnimation>
<!-- We end the Border so it's only behind the elements instead of acting as their parent -->
            <Grid Grid.Row="0">
                    <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>
                    <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>
                    <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>
                    <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>
                    <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>
                    <RowDefinition Height="60"/>
                    <RowDefinition Height="60"/>
                    <RowDefinition Height="Auto"/>

How can i display image in one of the column of grid using angular js ng-grid?

wish of those help If I got your question right , you can bind img tag to angular grid as a cell template . I created a Plunker for you . check it http://plnkr.co/edit/YIBa7np3kjip2Zzx7nBB?p=preview
var app = angular.module('app', ['ngTouch', 'ui.grid', 'ui.grid.edit']);

app.controller('MainCtrl', ['$scope','$sce', function ($scope,$sce) {

$scope.img="<img ng-src={{url}} />";
$scope.img="<img src='https://angularjs.org/img/AngularJS-large.png' />";
$scope.gridOptions = {
        enableSorting: true,
        columnDefs: [
          { name:'firstName', field: 'first-name' },
          { name:'1stFriend', field: 'lastName' },
          { name:'city', field: 'company'},
          { name:'getZip', field: 'employed', enableCellEdit:true},
          { name:'Photo', field:'photoP' ,cellTemplate:"<img src='https://angularjs.org/img/AngularJS-large.png' />"}
         data : [
              "first-name": "Cox",
              "lastName": "Carney",
              "company": "Enormo",
              "employed": true,
              "first-name": "Lorraine",
              "lastName": "Wise",
              "company": "Comveyer",
              "employed": false,
              "first-name": "Nancy",
              "lastName": "Waters",
              "company": "Fuelton",
              "employed": false,

I can't seem to display the background image. The background Image shows up for a split second but then crash 'failed to

like below fixes the issue You are getting that error because you are exporting ClockImage() which call the function first then exports the returned value, and in index.js React fails to render ClockImage because it's not a component.
You need to export ClockImage instead:
export default ClockImage;
