In terms of OO design, can two-d and the three-d point classes be derived from single base class?

this will help I don't see any reason not to. But if the only difference between Shapes is in the type of Points they contain, why not make the Shape class itself a template, or a "generic" in Java parlance?

What design pattern to use when I want only some derived classes to have access to a method in base class?

I hope this helps . It sounds as though you're missing another abstract class (SpecialChild for want of a better name) that inherits from Parent but from which Child2 and Child3 are derived.
                    Parent
                      |
   |------------------|------------|----------|
Child1            SpecialChild   Child4    Child5
                      |
         |---------------------|
      Child2                 Child3

Object model design; base class awareness of derived classes

like below fixes the issue Preamble: Is it bad design for a base class to be aware of and make interactions using derived types? I'm assuming not, so what approach should I consider for the following? , You should be able to generalize it:
public function get_ancestor($type){
    if($this->_parent instanceof $type){
        return $this->_parent;
    }
    if(null !== $this->_parent){
        return $this->_parent->get_ancestor($type);
    }
    return null;
}

When using a virtual base class in a multiple inheritance scenario, is it necessary for all derived classes to reference

wish helps you It semantically identical, since each derived class will have exactly one virtual base of type A. Mentioning the virtual base explicitly is quite nice, because the most-derived class constructs the virtual base (unlike what happens for non-virtual bases), and the construction order is important to keep in mind when writing the constructors of the derived classes.
I don't have a technical answer for (2). You don't have to do it, but it would be nice if you did. Like calling your parents, I suppose. As with many things, C++ doesn't force you to be reasonable.

Good design for a reusable class with many derived classes

I wish this helpful for you
Does this design seem good or are there some glaring holes I haven't accounted for? Or are there other common patterns used in situations like this?
