How can I check if a string I have returned from a cursor is empty or null in an Android cursor?

Any of those help When doing object comparison, you must use Object.equals(Object) method. Using == or != with Objects will only return true if both Objects reference the same thing. That is why you are falling through to the else.
name.equals("") is probably what you want to use.
if(name != null && !"".equals(name))
  tv.setText(name);
else
  tv.setText("Error");

Android database (SQLite) returns a non-empty cursor from an empty table

it helps some times OK: I figured this is because I'm using a MAX aggregation function in the query. This could be a bug, may be? I now use a sort with a limit clause instead of MAX and worked around.

Android Sqlite3 database: Cursor in SQLite is not returning null?

Hope that helps As @DougCurrie mentions: Query is returning non-Null cursors only: revised your code:
public boolean checkifExists(String number){
    String[] columns = new String[]{"_id"};
    String[] wehreargs = new String[]{number};
    this.openDataBase();
    Cursor c = myDataBase.query("mytable", columns, "_id=?", wehreargs, null, null, null)
    boolean hasEntry = c.moveToFirst()
    c.close();
    this.close()
    return hasEntry;
}

Android cursor always returning null

it should still fix some issue You have not positioned your Cursor on a row. Initially, it is at position -1. Presumably, given your existing code, you should call moveToFirst() on the Cursor after the null check and before your getString() calls.

text1 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView);
text1 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView2);
text1 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView3);
text1 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView4);
